    Would screws provide a strong enough joint for shelves?

    • @RusticDavid
      @RusticDavid 8 дней назад

      Hi yes screws are a very effective fastener for shelves but pay attention to the direction of the screws relative to the force upon them basically if they force is pulling the screw out of the wood it will be more likely to fail at some point , if the force is across the length of the screw it will only fail if the screw is cut or shears due to a strong force . Thicker diameter screws can bear more weight . I hope this helps you good luck with your project David

    Thank you. I hear you say that you use a 4 mm drill. What is the size of the screw? Also 4mm? I got the advice to use a 1 mm thicker drill for the piece of wood on top.

    • @RusticDavid
      @RusticDavid 11 дней назад

      Hi, i use a 4mm drill with a 4mm screw this allows enough freedom for the screw allowing the two boards to be pulled together, I wouldn’t recommend a bigger hole as the board will be able to move 1 mm in all directions.if you are using hard wood drill a 2.5mm hole in the board you are connecting to. Good luck with your project David

I use a nitrocellulose resin and mix into it fine sawdust the company is german I believe called Bormawachs it dries fast bormawachs.com/?&lang=2

      Hi well or you can chisel a hole around the head and try gripping it with a “mole grip” that’s the English name I think in other countries it has different names Try hammering the correct bit into the stripped head then try removing screw Or if its possible use a hacksaw blade and cut the screw between the two pieces screwed together Ot use brute force like a crowbar or hammer to snap the screw Good luck thanks for your comment

    • @RusticDavid
      @RusticDavid 3 месяца назад

      Hi it’s true what you say , but for a small shelf its stable enough, to stop the wobble ( technical name racking) you need to add diagonal braces across the corners or a back panel like a piece of thin plywood, or blocks of wood glued and screwed or nailed inside the corners. I hope this helps you Good luck with your project David
